About the Cover

Often, the first thing that people ask when they see images like the one on the cover of Elementary Algebra is, “Why?” Why the umbrellas? For artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the “why” is simple: to transform an ordinary environment by adding a new element that allows people to see and think about the setting in a new way. They positioned the umbrellas with mathematical precision to show land use density in two very different inland valleys: one in California; the other in Japan. The yellow represents the California valley’s dry, arid climate. Blue umbrellas were chosen to represent the lush, wet climate of the valley in Japan.

Why use images of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s art on these covers? Many students find themselves wondering “why” when they solve algebra problems (or try to). This text guides them to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts by showing them the “how” and the “why” of problem solving. Examples present a “Strategy” and the reason “Why” the strategy was chosen. Just as yellow and blue umbrellas can encourage people to see a landscape from a different perspective, the “why” of mathematical solutions in these texts encourages students to think about algebra in helpful new ways.

Praise for Tussy/Gustafson

“It is like an instructor teaching [the] examples in class.”

Yixia Lu, South Suburban College

“The WHY factor of this textbook is my favorite. I have never been satisfied with the “follow my example and do it” attitude. I personally strive very hard to prevent my students from leaving my classroom wondering what in the world did we do today. . . . This textbook just [keeps] getting better and better.”

Rebecca Huffman, Tyler Junior College
